Setting the integration with Google Tag Manager

4 min read Updated September 29, 2026 Altegio Support

Google Tag Manager (GTM) lets you manage analytics and advertising tags — Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, Meta Pixel and others — in one place without changing your website code. Once the integration is connected, your GTM container loads in the online booking form, and client actions in the form (opening the form, choosing a service, team member and time, creating an appointment) are sent to GTM as events.

Before setting up the integration, create an account and a container in Google Tag Manager.

Important

• To connect/disconnect the integration, the same user access rights are required as for Google Analytics: the Settings section: Manage users — Manage user rights (any of the rights), and access to the Online booking section.

• To add, edit or delete containers, access to the Online booking section is required.

• Only one container can be connected to a single online booking form. One container can be connected to several forms. To use different containers, create additional online booking forms.

• The container is set only in the integration settings. It cannot be passed through a parameter in the online booking link.

• If Google Analytics is also connected to the form and your GTM container contains a GA4 tag for the same data stream, events will be counted twice. Keep only one way of sending data to Google Analytics 4.

Getting the container ID

  1. In Google Tag Manager, create a container with the Web target platform or open an existing one.
  2. Copy the container ID: it is shown at the top of the workspace next to the container name and has the format GTM-XXXXXXX.
  3. Set up the tags you need and publish the container: click Submit, then Publish. Tags do not fire in the online booking form until the container is published.

How to connect the integration

  1. In Altegio, go to Administration mode, Integrations > Analytics section and select the Google Tag Manager application. On the page that opens, click Connect, then Continue. The Settings tab opens.
  2. Enter the previously copied identifier into the Container ID field in the format GTM-XXXXXXX.
  3. In the Online booking forms field, select the forms the container should be connected to.
  4. Click Connect Google Tag Manager. The container appears in the list.

Online booking events in Google Tag Manager

The online booking form sends Google Tag Manager the same events as Google Analytics. See the list of events and their parameters.

  • Each event arrives in GTM as a Custom Event with the same name, for example service_selected. To react to an event, create a trigger of the Custom Event type with the event name.
  • Event parameters are available through Data Layer Variables with the eventModel. prefix, for example eventModel.serviceId.
  • A Google tag (GA4) in the container receives only page views on its own. To send online booking events to Google Analytics 4, add a Google Analytics: GA4 Event tag fired by a Custom Event trigger and pass the parameters you need.

Cookie consent

For visitors from the EU, the online booking form denies analytics and advertising cookies by default (Google Consent Mode): analytics_storage, ad_storage, ad_user_data and ad_personalization are set to denied. They are granted after the client accepts cookies in the form’s cookie banner. For other visitors, cookies are granted right away.

Take this into account when setting up tags: tags that require consent fire for EU visitors only after they give consent.

Checking the integration

  1. Open Tag Assistant, click Add domain and enter the link to your online booking form.
  2. Go through the booking in the form that opens. Tag Assistant should show your GTM-XXXXXXX container and the online booking events.

Changes in the container take effect after you publish a new version. Google may keep serving the previous version for up to 15 minutes.

Editing or deleting a container

  1. Go to Administration mode, in the Integrations > Analytics section select the Google Tag Manager application and open the Settings tab.
  2. To connect another container to other forms, click Add a container, enter the container ID and select the forms.
  3. To change the identifier or the list of forms, click the pencil icon next to the container, make the changes and click Save.

To delete a container, click the trash can icon next to it and confirm with Delete container. The container stops loading in the online booking forms; it remains in Google Tag Manager.

Disconnecting the integration

On the Information tab of the application, click Disconnect. The containers are disconnected from all online booking forms. The containers and their settings in Google Tag Manager are kept.
