On October 15 this got more flexible. A new Google Tag Manager app in Altegio Integrations connects your own GTM container to online booking, so every step a client takes there can reach any marketing tool you use, and you decide which tags run in the widget and when.

Google Tag Manager, where you add tags, set triggers and publish versions. The container ID at the top (GTM-XXXXXXX) is what you connect to Altegio online booking. Recreated illustration, account and container names are examples.

This opens up new possibilities on both sides. Digital marketers and agencies can make online booking part of the same tracking setup as the website: count an appointment as a conversion in Google Ads and show it to TikTok, Microsoft Ads and other ad platforms, not only Google Analytics and Meta Pixel. Business owners get room to shape online booking around their brand and offers: show the old price crossed out next to the new one, add a note to one step, use their own font. Each change is a tag you add, test and switch off yourself, and an AI assistant can write the code for it.

Businesses started using it right away: in the first four days, locations in eight countries, from Germany and Switzerland to Armenia and Uzbekistan, connected the app to their online booking.

Below is what exactly launched and 11 ways to use it: six for measuring what happens between an ad click and an appointment, and five for changing what clients see in your online booking. At the end you’ll find the rules that keep online booking working while you experiment.

What launched

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free Google tool that works like a toolbox for your marketing scripts. You put tags into it (Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, Meta Pixel and others), set the rules for when each one fires, and publish the result. Instead of editing website code every time, you change everything in one place.

The Altegio app gives that toolbox a place inside your online booking:

You connect your GTM web container (its ID looks like GTM-XXXXXXX) to one or more online booking forms. The app is free.

The container loads inside the online booking widget, both when a client opens your booking link (from Instagram, your Google Business Profile or a messenger) and when the widget is embedded on your website.

The widget sends the container its events: opening the online booking, choosing a service, a team member and a time, creating an appointment. These are the same events the Google Analytics app has been sending for years.

One container per form, several forms per container. If you need different containers, for example for two brands, create separate online booking forms.

Google Tag Manager settings in Altegio (Integrations → Analytics). The full list is in the help center.

Event

What the client did

widget_loaded

Opened your online booking

screen_open_services

Opened the list of services

service_selected

Chose a service

screen_open_staff

Opened the list of team members

master_selected

Chose a team member

screen_open_date

Opened the date and time screen

time_selected

Chose a time

open_contacts

Opened the contact details form

booked

Created an appointment

phone_number_clicked

Tapped your phone number in the contact details

Each event arrives in GTM as a Custom Event with the same name. Its parameters, such as the service ID, are available through Data Layer Variables with the
eventModel.
prefix, for example
eventModel.serviceId
.

Part 1. Measure what happens between the click and the appointment

1. See the step where clients give up

An ad report tells you how many people clicked. Altegio tells you how many appointments came in. What happens in between usually stays a black box: did people leave because of the price, because the right team member was busy, or because the contact form asked too much?

With the events in GA4, you can see it step by step:

In GTM, create a trigger of the Custom Event type. In the event name, enter the events you need separated by
|
, for example
^(widget_loaded|screen_open_services|service_selected|screen_open_date|time_selected|open_contacts|booked)$
, and tick Use regex matching.

Create a Google Analytics: GA4 Event tag with that trigger. In the event name, use the built-in
{{Event}}
variable, so one tag sends every step under its own name.

In GA4, open Explore → Funnel exploration and build the funnel from these steps.

A Google tag (GA4) on its own only counts page views in the widget. The step-by-step picture appears only once you add the GA4 Event tag.

Then read the funnel like a diagnosis. Say 100 people open the date and time screen and only 35 pick a time. The ad is probably fine: people didn’t find a convenient slot, so it’s time to open schedules further ahead or add hours at popular times. If most of them pick a time but stop at the contact form, look at what you ask there. The numbers here are an illustration; your own funnel will show your weak step within a week or two of traffic.

2. Count appointments, not clicks, in Google Ads

If Google Ads only sees clicks, it buys clicks. Once it sees appointments, automated bidding can look for people who actually book.

Add a Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag with your conversion ID and label, triggered by the Custom Event
booked
.

Add a Conversion Linker tag on all pages, so the click and the appointment are matched.

If you want bidding to take value into account, set a fixed conversion value, for example your average appointment value.

You don’t need a thank-you page or a redirect after the appointment for this. Many businesses asked us for one only to have something to trigger the conversion on. Now the
booked
event is that trigger.

One thing to check before you switch it on. If your locations get the Book button in Google ads, Google already counts those appointments as the Appointments booked conversion (we explained how in our article about the Book button in Google Ads). An appointment made through that button can then be counted twice. Keep one conversion action as primary and set the other one as secondary, so that bidding sees each appointment once.

3. Add the ad platforms you actually use

Until now, online booking supported two analytics services out of the box: Google Analytics and Meta Pixel. If you advertise on TikTok, Microsoft Ads (Bing), Pinterest, LinkedIn or Reddit, the appointment stayed invisible to those platforms.

In GTM, most of them have ready-made tag templates in the Community Template Gallery, so you don’t need to write code. Fire each platform’s tag on
booked
and map it to that platform’s event for an appointment or a lead. Meta, for example, has a standard event called Schedule for exactly this.

About Meta Pixel: online booking still has its own field for it in the form settings, and that field takes one pixel. If you need a second one, for example your own pixel and your agency’s, add it in GTM. Just don’t load the same pixel both ways, or each appointment will be counted twice.

4. Bring back people who almost booked

Someone chose a service and even a time, then got distracted by a call and closed the tab. That’s the warmest audience you have, warmer than anyone who just saw your ad.

With the widget events you can build that audience. In GA4, create an audience of people who triggered
time_selected
but not
booked
in the last seven days, and share it with your linked Google Ads account. The Meta pixel lets you build a similar custom audience from events. Then show these people an ad a day or two later, while the decision is still fresh.

Keep in mind that in the EU these audiences only include clients who accepted cookies in your online booking (more on consent below).

5. Watch how people actually move through online booking

Funnels show where people leave. Session recordings and heatmaps show why: someone taps a service name three times expecting a description, scrolls past the service they came for, or gets lost on a long list.

Microsoft Clarity (free) and Hotjar both connect through GTM. Ten recordings of real clients going through your online booking often say more than a month of reports. Before you turn recordings on, check two things: that the tool masks what clients type in the contact form, and that it only runs after cookie consent for EU visitors.

6. Compare channels and locations in one container

Many businesses already use separate online booking forms for different channels: one link in the Instagram bio, another on the website, a third in Google. Connect the same container to all of them, and in GTM you can tell the forms apart by their links. That shows which channel brings appointments, not just traffic.

The same works for agencies and chains. An agency can keep one container per client and connect it to all of that client’s forms. A chain can use one container for every location and compare how the path to an appointment differs from one location to another.

Part 2. Shape what clients see in online booking

GTM also lets you fine-tune the widget itself. The container runs inside online booking, so a Custom HTML tag can add your own CSS and small scripts (in Altegio, this kind of custom code is called an injection). You add the tag, check it in GTM Preview and publish it when it looks right. It works both in the online booking opened by link and in the widget embedded on your website.

You don’t have to write the code yourself either. AI assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor write tags like this in a minute, as long as you show them the right piece of the page. One of the first ideas after the launch came from a business owner who wanted the old price crossed out next to the new one: with GTM, that’s one tag and a few minutes with an AI assistant.

How to make a change with an AI assistant

Show the AI the element. Open your booking link in Chrome, right-click the element you want to change and choose Inspect. In the panel that opens, right-click the highlighted line and choose Copy → Copy outerHTML.

Describe the task. Paste the HTML into the chat with a prompt like this one:

Write a Google Tag Manager Custom HTML tag for my online booking widget.
Task: show the old price crossed out next to the current price for these services: [list].
Here is the HTML of one service card from DevTools: [paste].
Requirements: CSS and plain JavaScript only, no external libraries.
Don't hide, move or block any buttons or prices the widget shows.
The widget is a single-page app: wait for the elements to appear and apply the change again when the screen changes.

Add the tag in GTM. Go to Tags → New → Custom HTML and paste the code. For style changes, use the All Pages trigger. For a change on one step, use a Custom Event trigger with that step’s event, for example
screen_open_services
for the list of services or
booked
for the screen after the appointment.

Check before you publish. Open GTM Preview, enter your booking link and go through the online booking the way a client would, on a phone-sized screen too. If everything works, click Submit → Publish. If something went wrong after publishing, open Versions and publish the previous one. Google may keep serving the old version for up to 15 minutes.

Here’s what owners most often want to change.

7. Your colors and your font

The online booking settings cover the basics. A short CSS tag goes further: your brand font, your button colors, the corner radius of the cards. For a client who comes from your website, online booking then looks like part of it rather than a different service.

8. The old price, crossed out

During a promotion, “€45 instead of €60” sells better than “€45”. A tag can show the old price crossed out next to the current one for the services you list. The price the client pays still comes from Altegio: the tag only adds the “was” price to the screen. Make sure that old price is one you actually charged. In many countries consumer law is strict about crossed-out prices.

9. A note or a confirmation on the right step

Some information matters on one step only: “Prepayment is required for appointments longer than two hours” on the list of services, “Please arrive 10 minutes early for your first visit” next to the time selection, a seasonal offer at the top of the list. A tag triggered by that step’s event shows the note exactly where the client makes the decision.

The same approach can add a checkbox like “I’ve read the preparation instructions” for selected services. Treat it as a reminder, not a record: the tick isn’t saved in Altegio, so it doesn’t replace a consent the client signs.

10. A messenger button for those who’d rather ask first

Some clients don’t book because they aren’t sure which service they need. A small “Not sure what to choose? Message us” button with a WhatsApp or Telegram link on the list of services catches them before they leave. Track its clicks as a separate event, and in a month you’ll see whether it brings appointments or just takes attention away from booking.

11. A confirmation screen that does more

The screen after
booked
is the moment the client is most attentive to you. Use it: how to find the entrance, where to park, what to bring, a link to your Instagram. A tag on the
booked
event adds a block with this information under the standard confirmation, and the same event can fire your Google Ads conversion.

Rules that keep online booking working

GTM gives you control, and with it responsibility for what you add. These rules come from the team that built the integration.

Stick to CSS and small additions. The widget is a single-page app, and its markup isn’t a public interface: class names and structure can change with any Altegio release. Don’t touch the booking and payment logic: don’t hide or rename buttons, change prices or interfere with the payment step. After Altegio updates, go through your online booking in GTM Preview once more.

Respect cookie consent. For visitors from the EU, the online booking widget denies analytics and advertising cookies by default (Google Consent Mode) and grants them after the client accepts cookies in the form’s cookie banner. Google’s own tags and most templates follow this automatically. Custom HTML tags don’t: for any tracking script in a Custom HTML tag, open the tag’s Advanced settings → Consent settings and require the consent it needs.

Don’t send personal data. Names, phone numbers and emails from the contact form don’t belong in analytics or ad platforms. If you work in healthcare, don’t send service names to ad platforms either: a service name alone can reveal something about a client’s health.

One path per system. The Google Analytics app and a GA4 tag in GTM sending to the same GA4 data stream count every event twice. The same goes for Meta Pixel in the form settings plus Meta Pixel in GTM, and for Google’s Appointments booked conversion plus your own
booked
conversion. Pick one path for each.

If something breaks, pause the tag first. If online booking behaves oddly after a change, pause the tag or disconnect the container. If the problem disappears, it was in the container, and the previous version in GTM will get you back to a working state.

Your online booking is protected from other people’s code. The container is set only in the integration settings and can’t be passed through a parameter in the booking link. Nobody can load their code into your online booking through a URL.

Google Analytics app or GTM?

If the Google Analytics app already gives you what you need, nothing changes: it keeps sending the same widget events to GA, and more than 1,600 locations use it. GTM is for when you need more than Google Analytics: conversions in Google Ads, other ad platforms, session recordings, your own changes in the widget.

You can run both apps side by side, and most businesses that connected GTM in the first days did exactly that. Just don’t send the same GA4 data stream both ways.

How to connect Google Tag Manager

In Google Tag Manager, create a container with the Web target platform, or open an existing one. Copy its ID in the GTM-XXXXXXX format.

Set up your tags and publish the container: Submit, then Publish. Tags don’t fire in online booking until the container is published.

In Altegio, go to Administration mode, open Integrations → Analytics and select Google Tag Manager (or open the app page directly). Click Connect, then Continue.

On the Settings tab, enter the container ID, select the online booking forms, and click Connect Google Tag Manager.

Check it: open Tag Assistant, click Add domain, enter your booking link and go through the online booking. Tag Assistant should show your container and the widget’s events.

To connect or disconnect the app, you need the same access rights as for the Google Analytics app. Step-by-step instructions with all settings are in the help center.

What’s next

This is the first version. Next, we’re adding more widget events and covering more of the online booking flow, so that a marketer can see the whole path to an appointment, not just its main steps.

In our article about vibe-coded booking systems, we argued that appointments, payments and client data belong in a system built for them, and your own ideas are best built on top of it. Google Tag Manager is the simplest form of “on top”: your tags, your changes and your experiments, without touching what keeps your calendar working.

FAQ

Does it cost anything?
No. The Google Tag Manager app in Altegio is free, and so is Google Tag Manager itself.

Do I need a developer?
For tracking, usually not: Google Analytics, Google Ads and most ad platforms have ready-made tag templates in GTM. For changes in the widget, an AI assistant writes the code, and GTM Preview lets you check it before clients see it. For anything beyond CSS and small additions, a developer’s review is a good idea.

Does it work in the widget on my website?
Yes. The container loads both in the online booking opened by link and in the widget embedded on your site.

Can I use the same container as on my website?
Yes, enter the same ID. Until now, the container on your website couldn’t see what happened in online booking: the widget runs as a separate page inside yours. Once the container is connected to the form, it loads inside the widget too. Keep in mind that tags with the All Pages trigger will then fire in online booking as well. If a tag should only work on your website, for example a chat, add a Page Hostname condition to its trigger: online booking opens on its own address, not on your site’s domain.

Can different forms use different containers?
Yes. One online booking form takes one container, and one container can be connected to several forms. To use different containers, create separate forms.

Will my changes survive Altegio updates?
Tracking tags that listen to widget events will. Visual changes depend on the widget’s markup, which can change with a release. Keep them small and check online booking in GTM Preview after updates.

Connect your GTM container to Altegio online booking: see where clients drop
