For UK businesses the payoff is quicker settlement and simpler reconciliation, and, depending on the provider, lower fees. The system is mature: by 30 July 2026, Open Banking Limited reported over one billion cumulative payments and weighted availability around 99.8%.

TL;DR:

Most payments settle over Faster Payments, but provider payout schedules and bank cutoffs vary, so track when funds become available rather than approval time.

Since 7 October 2024, sending and receiving firms share liability for qualifying authorised push payment scams, so confirm your provider’s claims and dispute procedures.

Start with a small booking deposit pilot, keep cards as a fallback, and train staff to interpret payment statuses before expanding the rollout.

Pilot sandbox webhooks, refund flows, and automated reconciliation, then require every payment to match an invoice without manual edits before rollout.

Commercial variable recurring payments launched in June 2026 for utilities, government bodies, charities and financial services; subscriptions come in later phases, so treat VRPs for memberships as a future option.

Table of Contents

How do open banking payments work in the UK?

Why do UK businesses adopt open banking payments?

What do regulation, fraud and security mean for your business?

What is the practical implementation checklist?

How should you evaluate providers?

What do the UK numbers say?

What this means for appointment-driven businesses

FAQ

Read next

How do open banking payments work in the UK?

A customer picks “pay by bank” at checkout, is passed to their own banking app, approves the payment there, and returns to your site. No card number is typed, and the customer never shares banking credentials with you. The regulated firm doing the passing is a payment initiation service provider (PISP), part of the wider group of third-party providers (TPPs) that must be authorised before they can move money on a customer’s behalf.

Here is what sits underneath:

Payment initiation and consent: the customer gives explicit consent for one specific payment, and their bank authenticates them.

Settlement rail: most payments settle over Faster Payments, so funds usually arrive quickly.

Single domestic payments: the standard one-off transfer, such as a deposit or an invoice.

Variable recurring payments (VRPs): the customer authorises repeat payments of varying amounts within agreed limits. Sweeping VRPs move money between a person’s own accounts, while commercial VRPs extend the idea to merchants.

Performance metrics: watch uptime and response time. Ecosystem-wide, average response time was about 349ms in mid-2026, a useful benchmark when you question a provider.

You do not build any of this yourself. Your provider handles bank connections and consent screens, while you receive a payment status you can trust. That status arrives quickly, which can help finance teams track payments.

Why do UK businesses adopt open banking payments?

Because the money arrives sooner and the books balance with less effort. Every payment carries a reference, so matching it to an invoice or booking stops being a weekly chore. Customers confirm in their banking app, which removes the usual card failures: expired cards, mistyped numbers, declined authorisations.

The commercial case usually rests on these points:

Fees can be lower than some alternative rails, depending on your provider’s pricing.

Settlement is usually fast, and the payer’s bank confirms the payment in real time, though some payments stay pending for a while.

Reconciliation is cleaner because references travel with the payment.

The payment process differs from card payments, since the customer authorises the transfer through their bank.

Typical uses include online checkout, invoice collection, recurring payments through VRPs as they roll out, refunds and payouts, and bank-transfer payment at the point of sale. For a salon or clinic, think deposits taken at booking, which we cover in our guide to accepting payments during the booking flow.

Why now? Adoption is no longer a niche experiment.

Adoption keeps growing: 40.16 million open banking payments were made in June 2026 alone, according to Open Banking Limited. Your customers have already used it, whether for utilities, retail or transfers, so asking them to pay by bank is no longer unfamiliar.

What do regulation, fraud and security mean for your business?

Regulation here is a moving target, so plan for it. In its National Payments Vision, the government asked the FCA to become the UK’s open banking regulator, and the FCA’s open finance roadmap (April 2026) aims to have a framework for the first open finance scheme in place by the end of 2027. The FCA and the PSR have coordinated open banking work through a joint committee. The PSR is now being merged into the FCA, subject to legislation, and its APP reimbursement rules stay in force through the transfer.

The rule that affects day-to-day operations most is APP reimbursement. Since 7 October 2024, payment firms must reimburse consumers, micro-enterprises and charities who lose money to qualifying APP scams over Faster Payments or CHAPS, up to £85,000 per claim and usually within five business days. The sending and receiving firms split the cost 50:50. That makes your provider’s compliance your concern too: ask how it handles scam claims and disputes, and how quickly it responds.

Build these into your plan:

Choose a provider that is authorised and can show how it supports APP scam claims.

Agree who contacts the customer, and how fast, when a payment is questioned.

Keep an audit trail of every payment event, confirmation and refund.

Write your refund and dispute process down before launch, not after the first complaint.

Pro Tip: Show your payment and cancellation terms at the point of booking. With Altegio payment policies, clients see the deposit amount, the no-show fee and the free cancellation window, and agree to them before they confirm the appointment.

What is the practical implementation checklist?

Treat this as a project with an owner, not a plugin you switch on. Work through it in order:

Start in your provider’s sandbox: obtain API keys, build the consent screens and test webhooks for every payment status.

Make every request idempotent, so a retry never creates a duplicate payment.

Design checkout so the bank-transfer option is obvious, and keep a card fallback for customers whose bank is unavailable.

Map each payment event to an invoice or booking, and decide how you handle pending, failed and expired payments.

Automate reconciliation against your accounting package and test it with real edge cases, such as part payments and refunds.

Train staff on what a customer sees, what the statuses mean and who to escalate to.

Set up monitoring so you notice a bank connection failing before your customers do.

Some details deserve their own attention:

Drop-off: every extra redirect loses people. Keep the consent journey short and explain in one line what will happen.

Settlement timing: Faster Payments is quick, but bank cut-offs and provider payout schedules differ. Record when funds are available, not just when the customer approved.

Connectors: check whether your provider already integrates with your booking or accounting system. Altegio, for example, connects to payment systems such as Stripe and, in EU countries, Adyen.

Scam procedures: document what happens if a customer reports being tricked into paying, including who investigates and who tells the customer.

How should you evaluate providers?

Compare providers on evidence, not brochures. Keep the process vendor-agnostic and ask for proof in each of these areas:

Compliance: FCA authorisation, and how they handle APP reimbursement and disputes.

Rails and speed: which schemes they settle over and typical payout timing.

Pricing: a transparent model with no unexplained extras.

Reliability: uptime commitments, status history and incident communication.

Refunds: how they are triggered, and how long they take.

Connectors: existing links to your accounting and booking platforms.

Developer experience: clear documentation, a working sandbox and responsive onboarding support.

Run a pilot with agreed acceptance criteria. A minimum viable integration passes if payments confirm promptly, every payment reconciles to an invoice without manual edits, refunds work end to end, and failures show a clear message and a working card fallback. If any item fails, fix it before widening the rollout.

What do the UK numbers say?

The figures below are the ones we would put in front of a finance director.

Measure

Latest reported value

Cumulative open banking payments

Over 1 billion

Cumulative API calls

Over 100 billion

Monthly payments (June 2026)

40.16 million

Weighted availability

99.8%

Average response time (June 2026)

349ms

All values come from Open Banking Limited’s 30 July 2026 milestone release. Commercial VRPs are still at an early stage. The UK Payments Initiative launched its commercial VRP scheme in June 2026, starting with payments to utilities, government bodies, charities and financial services. Subscriptions and wider e-commerce are planned for later phases.

What this means for appointment-driven businesses

We build for salons, clinics and chains, so our advice is practical: start small. In Altegio you can take a deposit at booking through a connected payment system where one is available in your country. For UK businesses, pay by bank isn’t available in the Altegio booking flow today, so if you want to test it, run it through a separate provider and keep card deposits as your default. In the EU, Altegio’s Adyen integration already adds local bank payment methods, such as online banking in Poland. Recurring open banking payments (commercial VRPs) are not yet available for subscriptions in the UK, and Altegio memberships do not support them. With online deposits in Altegio, the deposit is held against the appointment and applied when the visit is paid, so your front desk can see who has already paid. Whatever you add, make sure your front desk knows what each payment status means and someone watches the monitoring. Train first, then switch it on.

FAQ

What is paying by open banking?

Paying by open banking means approving a payment directly from your bank account through your banking app, without entering card details. A regulated third party initiates the transfer, and the money usually moves over Faster Payments within seconds.

What are the new banking rules in the UK?

The most relevant rule for merchants is APP reimbursement, in force since 7 October 2024. Sending and receiving firms share liability for qualifying scams. The FCA is also set to lead open banking’s future regulatory framework.

How do UK businesses start accepting open banking payments?

Choose an authorised provider, test in its sandbox and add a pay-by-bank option beside your existing methods. Connect payment events to your accounting or booking system so reconciliation runs automatically, then pilot with a small group of customers.

Are open banking payments secure?

Customers authenticate in their own banking app, so you never handle their banking credentials. Providers must be authorised, and regulators treat fraud prevention as a core requirement. You still need clear dispute and refund processes.

General information, not legal or financial advice; check the details with your payment provider.

Read next

Protect your most expensive slots: payment policies, card guarantee and Adyen

Accept payments during the booking flow – deposits and full prepayment

Reminders and deposits: how to reduce no-shows

UK open banking payments passed 1 billion in July 2026.
