Below is an 8-section template with 2026 numbers: costs in two scenarios, the break-even point and the labour office grant

In short

Write the plan first for yourself, then for the office or the bank: the Czech labour office grant for starting a business has a statutory ceiling of six times the average wage and cannot be applied for without a business plan, but it is your own cost table that should decide whether to sign the lease

Before the numbers, sort out the trade licence: hairdressing is a craft trade (řemeslná živnost) in Czechia, you need a vocational certificate, documented practice, or a responsible representative; without it the plan has nothing to stand on

Calculate the break-even point before you spend the first crown: in the model studio, fixed costs together with your own salary are covered by about 69 visits a month, that is 3–4 a day

Plan the OSVČ contributions years ahead: a starting sole trader pays 6,881 Kč a month in insurance from the first month, from the fourth year of business 9,026 Kč: the costs grow although nothing changes in the salon

What the business plan is for: the labour office, the bank and you

A business plan has three readers and only one of them is optional.

The labour office. The grant for setting up a work position for your own business is the cheapest capital you will find for the start: non-repayable support with a statutory ceiling of six times the average wage, i.e. over 250 thousand Kč. The actual amount is decided by the regional branch’s committee and tends to be lower; the conditions are being registered as a job seeker, using the money on equipping the premises, and a commitment to keep the position for at least 365 days. The application is filed on the labour office’s form and the business plan is its mandatory attachment: the sections below cover all its fields

The bank. A start-up loan with no company history stands entirely on the document: the bank wants to see the financial plan, the repayment sources and your own contribution. Same table, different reader

You. The most important reader. Before you sign a three-year lease, the business plan answers a single question: how many visits a month must land in the calendar for the salon to support itself and you. If that number looks unrealistic, better to find out now than after the renovation

Before you start counting: hairdressing is a craft trade

This is where Czech reality differs from most guides on the internet. Barbering and hairdressing is a craft trade (řemeslná živnost): to register it you need a vocational certificate or a school-leaving exam in the field, or higher professional or university education in the relevant area, one year of practice combined with requalification, or six years of practice. Since 2025, beauty services and manicure with pedicure also count among craft trades, so expect the same condition even if you are thinking about how to open a beauty salon.

If you lack the qualification, the trade does not end there: you can appoint a responsible representative (odpovědný zástupce), a qualified person who vouches for the professional standard of the operation. In practice it is often an experienced hairdresser from the team. But this arrangement belongs in the business plan in black and white: who the representative is, for what remuneration, and what happens if they leave.

Registering the trade itself is a matter of one form at the trade licensing office and a 1,000 Kč fee. One Czech peculiarity actually makes your life easier: the electronic sales registration (EET) was abolished on 1 January 2023, so the law does not require a till system and a proof of payment only needs to be issued on request

A hairdressing business plan: the 8 sections of the template, with examples

The order of sections is standard and fits both the labour office form and a conversation with a bank. For each section: what to write and an example figure.

1. Executive summary

Write it last, although it comes first. Five sentences: what you are opening, where, for how much, financed from what, and when the salon breaks even. Example: “A one-chair hairdressing studio in Olomouc, a 250 thousand Kč investment financed by the labour office grant and savings, break-even at 69 visits a month, reached in month five”

2. Business description

The legal form and the scope. For a single owner the natural choice is a sole trader (OSVČ) with the craft trade Barbering and hairdressing; consider a limited company only with a partner or a chain. The qualification belongs here too: your vocational certificate, practice, or the responsible representative, see above

3. Market and competitor analysis

You do not need an industry study: you need a map and an hour’s walk. Count the salons within 15 minutes on foot from the premises, copy their price lists from their online profiles and answer three questions: how you differ, what costs the same at theirs, and where the free niche is, in hours or in services.

The office and bank forms want a SWOT analysis in this section. Behind the acronym is an ordinary four-field table: what in your salon works for you, what holds you back, and what opportunities and threats wait outside, in the neighbourhood and on the market. A short one is enough if it is concrete:

Helps

Hurts

Inside the salon

the only barbering services in the district, prices 10% below the centre

one chair: your holiday stops the revenue

Outside

a new housing estate of 800 flats next door

two chain salons in a mall 1 km away

4. Services and price list

List the services with execution time and material costs, because a price list is really a valuation of the chair hour. Example: an 800 Kč service that takes an hour and uses 15% in materials leaves 680 Kč of margin per chair hour. A service that takes two hours at the same price earns half of that: you only see this in the table, not in the price list. How the chair-hour price is calculated, we laid out in the text on time management in a salon

5. Target client and marketing

One sentence instead of a three-page persona: who comes, from where and why. Example: “Women 25–45 from the estate and the nearby offices, a visit every 3–4 weeks, they book in the evening from their phone”. That last part is not a detail: in salons using Altegio about 30% of bookings arrive outside working hours, so the booking channel works when you no longer do.

Starter channels: a Google profile with booking enabled, Instagram with a booking link, a flyer with a second-visit code in the letterboxes of the new estate. The budget in the example: 2,000 Kč a month plus your time. Count the cost of the channel too: your own online booking costs a subscription, a marketplace takes up to 40% commission on an acquired visit

6. Team and organisation

The realistic start is working alone, and plan hiring from the break-even point, not from dreams: add the employer’s levies to a hairdresser’s gross wage, roughly a third on top. Before you write a full-time job into the plan, think through the pay model: fixed wage, commission, or mixed. And if you are still weighing up your own brand, we have also counted the alternative: a franchise

7. Investment plan

What the launch costs: the table below, in two scenarios

8. Financial plan

Monthly costs, the revenue plan and the break-even point: the heart of the document, which is why it gets its own sections below

The investment plan: two launch scenarios

Orientation ranges for autumn 2026, excluding rent and deposit; the state of the premises makes the biggest spread. What most guides miss: the reserve for the first months is part of the investment, not a luxury.

Item

Studio, 1 chair

Salon, 4 chairs

Renovation and adaptation of the premises

30–120k Kč

150–500k Kč

Furniture and chair equipment

60–150k Kč

200–450k Kč

Starting materials

15–30k Kč

50–100k Kč

Reception and waiting area

–

30–70k Kč

Booking system, launch marketing

10–25k Kč

25–50k Kč

Investment total

115–325k Kč

455–1,170k Kč

Reserve for 3 months of fixed costs

65–140k Kč

400–700k Kč

Total launch budget

180–465k Kč

855–1,870k Kč

Two conclusions from the table. First, the labour office grant can cover a substantial part of a studio’s budget, which is why the form deserves to be taken seriously. Second, in a four-chair salon the biggest item is the team’s wages, so the reserve grows faster than the investment in furniture

Monthly costs: real contributions, or the flat tax

An example for a one-chair studio in a mid-sized town. Every line is an assumption to swap for your own rates: the structure stays, the numbers are yours. Insurance contributions are taken from the ČSSZ overview.

Item

Real contributions (years 1–3)

Flat tax (paušální daň, band 1)

Rent of a small unit

8,000 Kč

8,000 Kč

Utilities and internet

2,500 Kč

2,500 Kč

OSVČ insurance and tax

6,881 Kč + income tax by profit

9,162 Kč incl. tax

Accounting

1,500 Kč

500 Kč

Marketing

2,000 Kč

2,000 Kč

Booking system, small fees

1,000 Kč

1,000 Kč

Fixed costs total

21,881 Kč

23,162 Kč

Your own salary

25,000 Kč

25,000 Kč

To cover every month

46,881 Kč

48,162 Kč

Three things about the contributions that such tables usually lack. The starter discount: a beginning sole trader pays a reduced social insurance advance of 3,575 Kč in the year the business starts and the two years after, plus 3,306 Kč health insurance; from the fourth year the minimum advances grow to 9,026 Kč a month and the break-even point shifts, although nothing changes in the salon. The flat tax in the first band (9,162 Kč a month at turnover up to 1 million Kč) bundles tax and insurance into one payment and saves paperwork, but for a beginning sole trader it comes out a few hundred crowns more expensive than the real regime: calculate both options. Your salary: for a sole trader it is not an accounting cost, but a plan in which the owner works for free is not a business plan, just a wish list

The break-even point: how many visits a day keep the salon alive

The formula is shorter than its reputation:

break-even = (fixed costs + your salary) ÷ margin per visit

Margin per visit in the example: an average 800 Kč service minus 15% for materials, i.e. 680 Kč. Let’s count: 46,881 Kč ÷ 680 Kč = 69 visits a month. At 21 working days that is 3–4 visits a day: less than half of a calendar that fits 7 hour-long visits. With the flat tax the threshold comes out at 71 visits, and from the fourth year, after the contribution rise, at 72: the difference is one visit a week.

The same formula shows the price of empty slots: at 5% of unexcused no-shows you lose about 3 visits a month, i.e. over 2,000 Kč of margin. How to push that percentage down with reminders and deposits, we laid out in the text on reducing no-shows.

Build the revenue plan from capacity, not from wishes: chair times hours times realistic occupancy. The first month is usually half the threshold, not a full calendar, which is why the reserve from the investment plan is not theory. You will see real occupancy and service times after the start in the booking system’s reports: we counted on five numbers why it pays to have them from day one

The labour office grant: the plan that pays for itself

If you are registered as a job seeker, you can apply, before registering the trade, for a grant to set up a work position for your own business. The statutory ceiling is six times the average wage, i.e. over 250 thousand Kč; the actual amount is decided by the regional branch’s committee based on the local labour market and tends to be lower.

Three conditions the plan must account for. The money is meant for equipping the premises, not for rent or materials: in the investment table above it mainly covers the furniture and equipment lines. You must keep the position for at least 365 days, otherwise the grant is returned: which is exactly why the committee wants to see the break-even point, not just a vision. And the application is filed before starting the business, not after: whoever registers the trade first and then goes to the office is out of luck

The most common mistakes in a salon business plan

Revenue from thin air: the plan assumes 80% occupancy from month one, while a realistic start is half the break-even point

The owner working for free: without your salary in the costs the salon “earns” on paper and leaves you hungry

A missing reserve: the investment counted to the crown, but nothing left for the third month’s rent

Forgotten contribution advances: the insurance grows from the fourth year of business although nothing changes in the salon

Confusing revenue with margin: 60 thousand Kč of revenue with materials, rent and a salary is not 60 thousand for you; count on margin per visit, not on turnover

From the plan to the opening

The finished document is half the journey: from here the deadlines begin. The qualification and the trade registration are handled at the trade licensing office, check the hygiene requirements for the premises with the regional hygiene station before signing the lease, and before you enter the salon’s name on the forms and the signboard, browse the 120 name ideas with an availability checklist

FAQ

What should a hairdressing business plan contain?

Eight sections: an executive summary, a business description with the legal form and the qualification, a market and competitor analysis, the services with a price list, the target client with a marketing plan, the team, the investment plan and the financial plan with the break-even point. Labour offices and banks expect exactly these parts, only the form differs

How much does opening a hairdressing salon cost?

A one-chair studio comes to 115–325 thousand Kč of investment plus a 65–140 thousand Kč reserve for the first months, a four-chair salon to 455 thousand to 1.17 million Kč plus a reserve. Ranges as of autumn 2026, excluding rent and deposit; the state of the premises makes the biggest difference

Can I open a hairdressing salon without a vocational certificate?

Barbering and hairdressing is a craft trade: you need a vocational certificate or a school-leaving exam in the field, a year of practice with requalification, or six years of practice. Without the qualification you can run the business with a responsible representative, a qualified person who vouches for the professional standard of the operation

Will I get a labour office grant to open a salon?

If you are registered as a job seeker and apply before starting the business, you can receive a grant for equipping the premises with a statutory ceiling of six times the average wage. The amount is decided by a committee; the conditions are a business plan and keeping the position for at least 365 days

This article is informational and does not replace legal or tax advice.
